Canopy Layers

Vegetated areas are composed of a top canopy layer.

However, they also have a vertical structure and contain different understory vegetated layers/strata. These may be composed of a tree, shrub, field (ferns, herbaceous and graminoids) and/or a ground layer (mosses and lichens).
